Easy and Healthy Homemade Baby Food

Beige wooden rectangular chopping board

When baby decided it was time to try “real” food I was super excited! At the same time I was not ready to spend my life savings on pre-prepared baby food…. and I liked the idea of feeding my little one whole foods. Just in a blended form. So this is where making the EASIEST homemade baby food became a part of our lives.

What You Need

  • Blender
  • Way to steam hard veggies or fruits
  • Jars or pouches for storage

Pretty short list right?

Making the Food

This is so easy! You will need about 5-20 minutes depending on how quickly you move about your kitchen and how long a certain veggie or fruit needs to soften. I use a little Nutribullet blender for this and it makes clean-up a breeze!

  1. Choose your Veggie or Fruit (see suggestions below)
  2. Soften if needed (mocrowave, steamer, pot of water on stove)
  3. Let cool
  4. Blend
  5. If too thick, add water, leftover water from steaming, or 100% Applejuice
  6. Store or feed to baby

Storing the Food

I have found that this is the one downfall of making your own food (if you consider no preservatives a downfall). You certainly dont have shelf stable food as easily. You can certainly seal the jars, and refrigerate, or even freeze the food. Just be sure to taste it (or smell it) before giving to baby as it can go bad if left too long. If mine wasnt eaten within 3 days I would freeze it or toss it. Freezing it works fine, but it does change the texture in some cases, so be aware of that.

Personally I like to use pint jars for storage. I would feed baby right out of the jar with a spoon. Another great way is to use re-fillable squeeze pouches. These work especially well for older babies and toddlers and are GREAT for a quick grab and go snack! I purchased theses Kirecoo squeeze pouches and have been very happy with them! They clean great, are easy to use, and never leak.
