I love Greek food! The flavors are a win for me. As a busy mom I also love food that is easy to make. This recipe’s flavor to ease of preparation ratio is really good! Packed with Mediterranean flavors and requiring very little from the cook? A mothers dream dinner.
Gyros are also a fun meal for toddlers because they come in a variety of parts. While mom and dad enjoy the whole wrap, toddler can eat chunks of the bread, bits of cheese, tomatoes, olives, rice and even some of the tender juicy chicken. A meal that makes everyone happy!
These Chicken Gyros pair great with my homemade naan and easy potato wedges. They are also a great place to use that tasty homemade yogurt in a recipe. And one more thing. The chicken is a perfect candidate for meal prep or freezer meals too!
Ingredients & Substitutions
There are a few components to this Gyro recipe and many of those include suggested recipes if you want to make things from scratch. Many of the ingredients can also be swapped out and substituted to best meet your needs.
Chicken: The chicken is the focus of this post. Crockpot Greek Chicken produces a tender and flavorful gyro meat that is hands off and a great easy crockpot meal for families. I use frozen chicken breasts for this, but a whole roaster chicken would also be great. In cases of not having one spice or another, I just use what I do have and make sure I get some for next time! You can also substitute the chicken for other meats if you want. Ground turkey makes a great crockpot Gyro meat!
Tzatziki Sauce: This one is VERY easy to make on your own, or if you want to keep it real simple you can buy a premade sauce from most grocery stores (like this Tzatziki from Walmart). When making the sauce, I often substitute out the fresh mint leaves for dried mint (or leave them out if I don’t have either on hand). I prefer to use my homemade yogurt as the base, but again substitute in any plain yogurt and you can even use sour cream in a pinch. Red wine vinegar can be swapped for lemon juice or apple cider vinegar if needed.
Naan/Pita Bread: For a quick and easy meal you can buy a great Naan from the store. I personally love these Stonefire brand naan bread packages from Walmart. While tasty, those are the more expensive route. I have a great naan recipe that makes a VERY good naan bread for gyros. It is much less expensive (as long as you have time) while still being fluffy and flavorful. If you are looking to go a gluten free route I suggest serving the gyro fillings on lettuce or rice for a bowl style gyro.
Other toppings you may want on your Gyro:
- Shredded lettuce
- Chopped tomatoes
- Chopped cucumbers
- Feta Cheese
- Olives (Kalamata if you like that)
- Turmeric Rice (see my linked post for the recipe)
Step-by-Step Instructions
To prepare the chicken:
- Place 2 pounds of meat in the crockpot (so about 3-4 large chicken breasts). Don’t stress about the exact amount. Around 2 lbs. will turn out great. And it can be frozen or raw.
- Chop one onion and throw it in to the crockpot. I love the taste of vedalia onions, but again dontt stress, any onion works (even a red one)!
- Add 1 TBS garlic, fresh or powdered, then 1 TBS marjoram, 1 TBS Rosemary, 2 tsp salt, and about ½ cup of chicken broth.
- Drizzle with some olive oil or butter to keep the chicken more tender.
- Cook on low for about 6 hours. If you need to cook it on high, go for it! Itll take closer to 4 hours. The chicken just may not be as tender.
To Serve or Store the Chicken:
Shredded is the best way to serve this if you ask me. You can also slice the chicken up. Honestly if it turned out right, the chicken will be so tender that when you try to slice, it will just fall apart and look more shredded.
If you are going to eat it right away then enjoy! If not, I will often freeze this in quart size baggies that lay flat in the freezer and are easy to defrost. Then you can pull it out later and serve in gyros, on rice, or however you want to enjoy your tasty chicken!
How to Serve Greek Chicken Gyros
To serve the chicken on a gyro, start with naan or pita and then top with:
- Shredded Chicken
- Turmeric Rice
- Feta Cheese
- Chopped Tomatoes
- Shredded Lettuce
- Kalamata Olives (if you like that)
- Tzatziki Sauce
I provided links above for my homemade naan, turmeric rice, and tzatziki sauce. If you want the BEST version of the Greek Chicken Gyro… well in my unbiased opinion that is the way to go. But using storebought naan, and tzatziki and even leaving out the rice still leaves you with a delicious dinner and is much easier. Some nights that is what we need, even more than fresh homemade naan.
I also LOVE to serve this with my homemade roasted potato wedges on the side. And if you are feeling VERY Greek? Well I also have a great recipe for Baklava. (that buttery, sweet, layered pastry dough Greek dessert).
Why Moms Love This Meal
Like any great meal, this one comes in “choose your own adventure” pieces. Meaning its is totally customizable for eaters with different preferences. I personally do not like kalamata olives. At all. So I leave them out. But I love feta cheese! So that gets heaped on my Gyro.
For toddlers, these piece meals are great too! I serve it to my toddler in small portions of each ingredient and let them mix and match as they choose. Chopped pita, feta chunks, some shredded chicken (which is usually ignored in lieu of the cheese) etc…
This meal also makes great leftovers. You can repurpose the various parts into rice bowls, salads, more Gyro wraps etc… And the chicken? Super freezer friendly for future meals!
